5 Tips To Avoid Gaining Weight on a Road Trip!
I think before you agree to marry or become business partners with someone you should have to take a road trip in the car with them.
Not a trip across town. I’m talkin’ 3 tanks of gas minimum.
After 10 or 12 hours of windshield time you pretty much know where they rank on the annoying scale.
Luckily, Blakley and I are pretty awesome road companions. We’ve racked up many, many, many hours behind the wheel together in our 18 years and we do pretty well.
Don’t get me wrong. We still argue about stupid things like what the AC should be set on and whether or not I’m allowed to stop and pee yet. But we aren’t ready to sleep in separate beds after a 3-day roadie.
We went from Boise to Moab today as part of the 3-day trek to Texas.
These guys were super impressed.
One of our clients asked what we do to try and stay on track with our nutrition when we travel.
For starters, our “eat in the car” days don’t look like our “eat at home” days, but here’s the gist of our approach.
#1 - We bring an electric cooler in the car. We use THIS one from amazon. It can run on AC or DC so you can bring it inside and plug it in when you get to your destination also. Not having to mess around with ice is awesome and you can fit more in the cooler too.
#2 - Snack/Protein Bars. On a regular day we wouldn’t eat more than 1 snack bar. I had 3 today. Is it ideal to get 600 calories from snack bars? Probably not, but it beats the heck out of a bacon double cheeseburger if you’re not trying to get a stomach ache or gain weight. I try to make at least one a pure protein snack bar like an Epic bar or other meat based snack with decent protein. Protein is tough to get on the road.
#3 - Sammiches. We each had two sandwiches today. Easy to make ahead of time and easy to eat on the go.
#4 - Fruit. We keep it simple. Apples and bananas. Easy to eat and you can throw the left overs out the window. (Is that littering?)
#5 - Stay in a place with a kitchen. Try to book your overnights at airbnbs or hotels that let you make your own dinner/breakfast. Typically we will check in and then hit the grocery store for whatever we want vs. going out to eat.
That’s basically it.
Sometimes we decide to get donuts for breakfast instead.
Sometimes I’ll go for a Chick-Fil-A sandwich instead.
But those are the exceptions and not the norm.
And whether we’re headed in the right or wrong direction with our health is really the sum of what we do on the regular, not once or twice.
Hope y’all have a great day.
