How To Keep Your Metabolism Healthy As You Age - Keep burning calories!

Moving makes you body and your brain function better.

You know what moving also helps? Your metabolism!

If you’re over 25… your metabolic power is decreasing by about 3-5% every decade. The main reason for this is the loss of lean body mass. Bone and muscle are so metabolically active that a drop is your metabolism could largely be due to a drop in your lean body mass as you age.

We don’t want that to happen!

If you keep, or even improve, your lean body mass from the age of 25 to 35 to 45… guess what your metabolism doesn’t do as much of… drop!

We aren’t talking about turning back the clock but we are talking about aging well. Have you seen Jane Fonda lately on our favorite Netflix show “Grace & Frankie”. The woman is 80 years old and you’d think she is 50. THAT’S how I want to age.

Back to the subject at hand… metabolism and MOVING THAT BODY!

‘Moving that body’ is important but also HOW we move it matters to our metabolism.

Remember our discussions on ATP when we talked about how our body uses food for energy? ATP is the bodies energy currency. It is needed when we burst into action… and then when we keep going more ATP is needed so our body gets busy using stored ATP… and then when we keep on keeping on going and our body switches gears and uses oxygen for most of the ATP regeneration. We’ve touched on all of our bodies energy systems at this point. If we don’t ever hit that state of intensity’, some of our bodies systems don’t really need to work as hard. As we work all of our system, we are also working to preserve muscle loss and preserve our metabolic power.

SCIENCE BREAK…

Damaging your muscle with exercise means your body needs to repair that muscle.

Working that body asks of our cells to produce more energy (ATP).

It also stresses our skeletal and connective tissues.

It also means we circulate more oxygen and nutrients around our body.

Its also means our bodies defenses and immunities are challenged.

It ALSO means we have more brain activity (think about what it’s like counting rounds and reps in a workout!).

ALL THIS means our body is AT WORK dealing with all these demands and then trying to recover and repair itself.

OUR BODY WAS MADE TO WORK and WANTS (NEEDS) to perform these functions.

We need proper nutrition to make these functions happen smoothly and WORK to make our body age smoothly.

Are you 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80…? It’s never too late to start and let your body WORK like it was meant to… now let’s GO!
