FAT IN A DAY?

FAT IN A DAY?

We’ve all gone nuts for a day or at a party or special meal and just blown the doors off.  I’m talking a 3,000 calorie meal or a 7,000 calorie day.  You wake up the next morning and you’ve gained 4 pounds!

So can these short burst, binges make us gain fat in just 1 day?  Absolutely they can, but maybe not as much as you think.  That 4 pound increase you see on the scale isn’t all fat (although some of it is).  Remember, when we eat more than we burn, the body stores it as fat.  The part of that weight gain that isn’t fat is made up of water held in the muscles and cells due to high carbohydrate and sodium intake as well as the weight contributed by our body storing excess food as glycogen in our muscles and liver for future energy demands.

Typically within a day or three of normal eating our weight settles back to it’s original amount or slightly higher.

The problem comes when these high calorie meals/days are no longer a rarity.  Remember, you become what you do consistently.  Consistently overeating leads to fat gain.

So if you have a big blowout, enjoy it and move past it.  Keep them few and far between and enjoy feeling good knowing that you aren’t sabotaging your progress.
