ENERGY SYSTEMS: OXIDATIVE

In the last couple weeks we talked about the two anaerobic energy systems of the body that don’t require oxygen to make our muscles contract.  They were responsible for intense bursts of energy.

Let’s talk about today about the energy system that provides us with longer term energy once the anaerobic systems are spent.  The oxidative system kicks in around the 2 minute mark of exercise and can power you with energy for a very long time.

You cannot generate the same strong force that you can during the anaerobic phases, but you can work for much longer.

The oxidative system burns carbohydrates, fats and protein for energy.

In the coming weeks we will talk about training all three energy systems.
