DOES FAT MAKE YOU FAT?

With the ketogenic diet reaching epic proportions it’s almost impossible to find a stick of butter or a package of bacon at the store.  Kidding of course, but high fat, low carb is all the rage.

So with all this fat consumption, you might be wondering… “Won’t all that fat make me fat?”

Well, it depends.  When it comes to fat gain and loss, energy balance is the king.  Eat more of anything than you are using, and the body will convert it to fat.  Eat less of anything than you are burning and your body will use stored fat for energy.   Calories in, vs. calories out. Yes, calories matter.

Remember that a gram of fat contains 9 calories while a gram of protein and carbohydrate contain 4 grams each.  So obviously, you won’t be able to eat as much  volume of high fat foods and remain at the same caloric intake.

There is more to this than we have room for here (carbohydrates are converted to glycogen before being converted to fat), but let’s keep this simple.  Eating a high fat diet will not make you gain fat.  Eating more calories than you need will.
