WHY KETO WORKS

I know we give the ketogenic diet a hard time since we consider it to largely be a fad, but let's talk about the positives and why it can work for some people.

As you know, the bottom line for losing fat is to keep your body in a negative energy balance.  That means you need to burn more calories than you're eating for an extended period.

The ketogenic diet prescription is extremely low carbohydrate, moderately low protein, and high fat. Although western culture cuisine is rich with carbohydrates, it's also easy to find high fat foods that are low in carbohydrates.

Breakfast might look like eggs and bacon.  Lunch might look like fish and brocolli and dinner could be a steak with butter, some spinach and a few tomatoes with an oil dressing.

So you've avoided high carbohydrate foods, but don't forget the golden rule for weight loss.  How many calories did you consume?  It matters.

If your goal is body fat loss and you can adhere long term to a low carbohydrate lifestyle, the ketogenic diet will work for you.  Don't be fooled at onset though as almost ALL of the weight you lose will be the water contained in your cells and the glycogen stores in your muscles.

CAVEAT ***If you are an avid exerciser or engage in high intensity weight lifting or sport, we do not recommend the ketogenic diet for fat loss, even if it is sustainable for you.  Carbohydrates are your friend when it comes to exercise and recovery from intense workouts***
