MASTERS
Who you callin' old?!
Let's face it, as we get older, our bodies change. It takes our muscles longer to recover from the stresses of the gym (and life). We are less sensitive to protein. Our joints are not typically as robust as they were in our youth.
But that's ok! We can still kill it in life and in the gym. We just need to be smart about it. It's pretty well agreed upon that the factor in training that needs to be adjusted most often in masters athletes is total volume. By volume, we mean the total amount of work (reps and/or load) done over a period of time.
That can look like reduced weight on the bar or it can look like fewer reps. The amount of volume reduction will be different from person to person with the person's ability to recover from exercise being the primary driver.
It's a trial and error process that takes some experimenting with. Without a reduction in total volume as we age, we increase our risk of injury and nagging pain from things like tendinitis.
